A documentary titled The Threat Nearby, examining the war in Ukraine and its broader historical and geopolitical context, is premiering with English subtitles tonight at 7 p.m. CET on the YouTube channel of europeanconservative.com. The film, titled Baljós közelség (The Threat Nearby), features personal testimonies and commentary by analysts and experts aimed at presenting the realities and background of the conflict.
The documentary recently premiered at the Uránia National Film Theatre in Budapest Hungary, where it was shown to a packed audience. The screening marked the first public presentation of the film, which focuses on the experiences of those directly affected by the war. Now it is premiering online to reach broader audiences.
Directed by Ádám Tősér, the documentary seeks to portray the true face of the conflict through the perspective of individuals for whom the war is a daily and tragic reality.
The film shows the sometimes gruesome details of life during war: families torn apart, widows, orphans, and all who are affected by the war even though they did not choose it. The documentary highlights the fate of ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia, kidnapped and brought to the frontlines to die for a country that has taken away their freedom of language.
Besides shedding light on the human cost of the conflict, the film also addresses the broader geopolitical dynamics surrounding it, stressing the urgency of pursuing diplomatic solutions.
Alongside emotional personal stories and statements, the film also examines the origins of the war through a research-based approach. Historians and analysts discuss the dynamics leading up to the conflict, the historical background of Russian–Ukrainian relations, and developments such as the evolution of Ukrainian national identity.
