Police arrested Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former prince, on Thursday morning and searched his addresses.
Reports say Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office over information in the Epstein files linked to his time as a trade envoy. The investigation appears to focus, at least in part, on documents exchanged between Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein.
What already seems certain, though, is that this unprecedented arrest will have implications beyond the former prince.
Veteran royal reporter Jennie Bond described the news as “extraordinary and shocking,” adding that it was a “nightmare” for the King.
And former royal correspondent Charles Rae believes that political figures could be caught up in this scandal, too. He said, “The fallout of this is going to reverberate around all sorts of government departments.”
Everybody’s going to be tainted in some fashion or other by this.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is already facing calls to resign over his decision to appoint Peter Mandelson to the role of U.S. ambassador, despite knowing that Mandelson maintained ties with Epstein after his paedophilia conviction.
Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein. Barrister Chris Daw also stressed on Thursday that “we don’t know what the police have got, we don’t know what the evidence is.”
The King, for his part, has said in a statement that “what now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.”
In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation. Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.
