Early on Sunday, a blast shook the area around the Embassy of the United States in Oslo, Norway. Authorities reported that the detonation took place at the building’s consular entrance, causing minor damage.
According to the police, the attack was reported at around 1 a.m. local time. Some “minor” injuries occurred, authorities confirmed, without further commenting on the nature of the injuries, and witnesses saw smoke rising from the area around the building.
Significant law enforcement resources were deployed to the scene, including drones, police dogs, and helicopters, while bomb disposal units searched the area for additional explosive devices. The area was cordoned off, and investigators began to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.
No details have been released at the time of writing as to what caused the explosion.
Norway already has a moderate terror threat level in place. According to the authorities, there is currently no immediate danger to the public.
The security of diplomatic missions around the world is being given special attention in view of increased international tensions, particularly with regard to military operations in the Middle East.
