The UN nuclear agency has confirmed a drone strike on the turbine building of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, sparking fresh accusations between Moscow and Kyiv.

The capacity of the power plant to be built with the €15 billion project at Jaslovske Bohunice is expected to reach 1,200 megawatts.

Russia started the evacuation of 18 settlements around the plant on Friday, May 5. Some observers fear the evacuations are not voluntary.

The current state of affairs at Zaporizhzhia greatly alarms the international community, which fears a repeat of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

“This time a nuclear catastrophe was miraculously avoided, but miracles cannot last forever,” Energoatom warned.

Emmanuel Macron announced the plan to build new nuclear reactors.
