Following Tunisia’s constitutional reforms under President Kais Saied, the country is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections on December 17th, albeit some parties will be boycotting the vote over their opposition to the reforms.
One of the focal points of opposition to the president is represented by the General Labor Union (UGTT), one of Tunisia’s principal trade unions, with UGTT leader Noureddine Taboubi declaring in a recent speech:
We no longer accept the current path because of its ambiguity and individual rule, and the unpleasant surprises it hides for the fate of the country and democracy…We will not hesitate to defend rights and freedoms whatever the cost.”
These declarations may anticipate a future general strike.
It remains to be seen whether the UGTT is able to command enough support, or whether the President’s reforms are ultimately favored by the Tunisian population.
