A 23-year-old Afghan asylum seeker launched a knife attack inside a refugee centre in northern Germany, killing one man and critically injuring another.
The stabbing happened on Thursday evening in Güstrow, a small town near Rostock, where the suspect lived in the local asylum accommodation. Witnesses said he repeatedly stabbed his two compatriots on the second floor of the building. A 25-year-old victim died at the scene, while another was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Prosecutors in Rostock confirmed the attacker is now in pre-trial detention.
Residents of the centre described scenes of terror. “It was a bloodbath,” said one, while another recalled hearing two men’s footsteps just before the assault, one of them sounding “clearly afraid.” Eyewitnesses said the attacker had been drinking alcohol beforehand.
The asylum facility on Glasewitzer Chaussee is the largest in Güstrow, providing more than 200 places and housing mainly Afghan and Syrian residents.
