The German Chancellor warned that forcing Ukraine into a peace its people cannot accept would be a grave mistake.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Thursday, December 11th that U.S. president Donald Trump had received a proposal outlining the territorial concessions Ukraine is prepared to consider in order to end its war with Russia.

Merz said the proposal was sent after he and other European leaders spoke by phone with Trump on Wednesday, December 10th.

“It mainly concerns the question of what territorial concessions Ukraine is prepared to make,” he said, cautioning that “the Ukrainian president and the Ukrainian people must ultimately answer that question.”

Speaking at a joint press conference with NATO chief Mark Rutte, Merz stressed that

it would be a mistake to force the Ukrainian president into a peace his people will not accept after four years of suffering and death.

Merz added that further talks with the U.S. were planned for the weekend, and that an international meeting on Ukraine “could take place at the beginning of next week.”
