Foreign minister rages at her country’s continual enforced absence from Brussels political forums.

Georgia complained on Tuesday, June 23rd, that European Union international meetings are being arranged almost solely to spite Tbilisi.

According to Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili, Brussels is intentionally not inviting Georgia to participate, most recently to yesterday’s interparliamentary committee meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.

With more than 50 members of national parliaments both from EU member states and enlargement candidate countries, it looked like the type of gathering where one would expect to find Georgia.

A European Parliament (EP) press service representative stated that elected officials from Tbilisi had not been invited to the meeting because the EP does not recognise the legitimacy of the Georgian Parliament (its position since the reelection of a Georgian Dream government in 2024). The EP

has called for EU member states to limit political contacts with the Georgian Dream authorities to matters of strict necessity, while maintaining and strengthening engagement with Georgian civil society, independent media and academic institutions.

Botchorishvili called this out, asserting that

They do not invite Georgia to discussions on topics such as enlargement and connectivity. You get the impression that the meeting is organised solely to exclude Georgia and create a one-day agenda domestically in the country.

Negotiations on the country’s EU membership are now on hold until 2028, while Moldova and even Ukraine seem to be moving closer to this goal.
