An Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) mayoral candidate will be allowed to run in Nörten-Hardenberg’s local elections, after the city’s election committee unanimously approved her candidacy on Wednesday, July 29th.
This follows administrative attempts to obstruct or ban the candidacy of Reinhild Goes, prompting Lower Saxony bureaucrats to examine her loyalty to the German constitution. Now the Northeim district has performed this examination, subsequently notifying the election committee of “insufficient evidence” to suggest a lack of loyalty.
An initial win for the AfD candidate came when all five voting members of the election committee supported her approval, meaning she can now run for mayor.
Particularly pleasing was the way the decision humiliated the 20–30 demonstrators who traveled from Göttingen specifically for the meeting and wore FFP2 masks throughout. Antifa heckling proved insufficient to persuade the election committee to block Goes from standing in a democratic election. To quote one of the protesters, “Thanks a lot, five old white men!”
