The overt move aiming to do away with major political opponents was celebrated with a standing ovation by Tisza MPs.

The Hungarian parliament on Monday, July 13th adopted the 17th amendment to the Basic Law (Hungary’s constitution) with 139 votes in favor and 6 against.

As we reported, the amendment was proposed by PM Péter Magyar as part of what he dubbed Operation Purgatory Fire.

The Fidesz and KDNP factions boycotted Monday’s session and vote, as Gergely Gulyás resigned as Fidesz’s parliamentary group leader in protest.

The MPs of the radical right-wing Mi Hazánk party opposed the amendment. The Tisza Party members of parliament celebrated the adoption of the amendment that removed the legally elected Hungarian President of the Republic from office with a standing ovation.

If President Sulyok signs the amendment (which Magyar claims he cannot do as he no longer fills the position), his mandate and that of four constitutional judges–including the court’s president Péter Polt–will be terminated the next day. Also, those MPs who have already served for 12 years already will not be allowed to run for parliament again.

Viktor Orbán posted a black heart on social media as he departed to watch the finals of the FIFA World Cup, along with a black and white picture of Péter Magyar and the caption “Hungarian democracy 1990-2026”.
