George Simion, the nationalist candidate who was defeated in Romania’s presidential election on Sunday, announced on Tuesday that he plans to file an appeal with the constitutional court, seeking to annul the results due to alleged foreign interference.
“I officially ask (the) Constitutional Court to annul Romanian presidential elections,” he posted on X after Sunday’s vote, citing “external interferences by state and non-state actors” in a post displaying the flags of France and Moldova.
🚨🇷🇴 I officially ask Constitutional Court TO ANNUL Romanian presidential elections (May 2025).
— 🇷🇴 George Simion 🇲🇩 (@georgesimion) May 20, 2025
For the very reasons December elections were annulled: EXTERNAL INTERFERENCES by state and non-state actors.
This time proven with evidence! Neither 🇫🇷, nor 🇲🇩, nor anyone else has…
Simion said he has evidence that “dead people” voted in Sunday’s second round, and that €100 million was spent in Moldova to buy votes. Simion has previously alleged that Moldova was interfering in an attempt to swing voters to eventual winner Nicuşor Dan.
He also called on Telegram founder Pavel Durov to testify and “share firsthand what he knows about the disinformation and digital operations that interfered with Romania’s elections.” Durov has accused the French government of pressuring him to censor conservative voices on his encrypted messaging app in the days leading up to the election.
