Energy policy will remain consumer-focused and protecting the interests of end-users will come first, says India.

While U.S. president Donald Trump claims that New Delhi has agreed to stop buying Russian oil, the Indian Foreign Ministry responded that its energy policy is driven by the interests of its citizens.

“Ensuring stable energy prices and secured supplies have been the twin goals of our energy policy,” stated Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Randhir Jaiswal on Thursday, October 16th.

Jaiswal also noted that energy cooperation with the U.S. has been growing and discussions are ongoing.

India imports over 85% of its oil needs and, like some of its European counterparts, has sharply increased purchases of discounted Russian crude since 2022, despite Western pressure.
