Iran’s foreign minister on Thursday, July 30, warned Bulgaria and Cyprus not to allow U.S. and British military bases on their soil to be used for attacks against the Islamic Republic.
According to Iranian state media, Abbas Araghchi cautioned Sofia about a decision to allow the temporary deployment of U.S. military aircraft at the Bezmer air base. In a separate call with Cypriot officials, he also stressed that the island’s British sovereign bases in Cyprus must not be used to launch attacks against Iran.
The official responses of his Bulgarian and Cypriot counterparts, Velislava Petrova-Chamova and Constantinos Kombos, respectively, have yet to be reported. However, given the international reach of Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the thinly veiled threat could point to greater instability in the near future.
