G7 leaders on Wednesday, March 11th rejected easing sanctions on Russia, despite the impact of the Middle East conflict on global oil markets, French President Emmanuel Macron announced.
Speaking after a video call with other G7 leaders, Macron said “We also stated at this G7 meeting that this situation in no way justifies lifting the sanctions that exist against Russia.”
The discussion of the leaders of the world’s largest economies focused on the economic fallout from the ongoing war with Iran, which has disrupted shipping traffic in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Macron, whose country currently holds the G7 presidency, urged leaders to coordinate actions to restore navigation in the strait “as soon as possible.” He stressed that freedom of navigation must be clearly reestablished in all affected states following the standstill in one of the world’s key shipping routes.
Macron also said there was “no confirmation” that mines had been deployed in the Strait of Hormuz.
