Police in Bosnia and Herzegovina have arrested a man suspected of setting fire to an outdoor altar and vandalising Catholic sites in the pilgrimage town of Medjugorje.
The suspect was detained near the town of Ljubuški after reportedly being found and held by residents in the village of Cerno until officers arrived.
CCTV footage showed a man approaching the outdoor altar behind St James Church at around 4:46 a.m. on Tuesday, pouring flammable liquid over the site and starting a fire before fleeing.
Earlier that morning, police received a report that a statue of the Virgin Mary on Apparition Hill had been defaced. Several other religious statues and monuments in Medjugorje were also damaged or marked with graffiti overnight.
A spokeswoman for the regional interior ministry confirmed that a person suspected of involvement in the offences had been arrested.
Police forensic work and a criminal investigation remain under way.
