Russia confirmed on Wednesday, October 22nd that preparations for a prospective presidential summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump are still ongoing, despite the U.S. leader’s recent decision to call off the meeting in Budapest.
Trump previously announced plans for a second round of talks—following August’s summit in Alaska, which did not produce any peace deal. However, he later stated he did not want to engage in a “wasted” meeting.
When asked about Trump’s comments, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters
No one wants to waste time, neither President Trump nor President Putin.
Despite the uncertainty, Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said preparatory work is ongoing. Without providing further details, he was quoted by the TASS state news agency as claiming “We are saying that preparations for a summit are continuing.”
