NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte is cutting jobs within the most powerful military alliance as part of a substantial restructuring effort.
The restructuring comes at a time when defence spending is soaring all across Europe, and NATO member states want to ensure that the alliance’s Brussels headquarters is working more effectively.
According to experts, Rutte wants to make NATO more efficient and use its resources “wisely and sparingly.”
He is presumably implementing his cuts “in close consultation” with the U.S. which, under President Donald Trump, has denounced European countries for relying too heavily on the United States for protection.
Rutte, who took on the position of NATO chief last October, is planning to abolish two divisions and cut back on many positions at the headquarters located in Brussels.
The cuts, however, don’t “seem to be significantly high” and personnel would also be hired, according to insiders who spoke to Politico.
