German prosecutors have charged two Afghan IS supporters with preparation for a terrorist attack near the parliamentary building in Stockholm, Sweden. The accused claim to have plotted a shooting in retaliation for Sweden allowing Quran burnings.

One of the charged, named only as Ibrahim MG., is “sufficiently suspected” of being a member of a terrorist group, while the other, Ramin N., is suspected of supporting a terrorist group. Ibrahim MG., prosecutors said in a press release, joined the Islamic State offshoot group “Islamic State Khorasan Province” (ISKP or ISIS-K)  in 2023.

From then on, Ibrahim MG, together with Ramin N., planned to kill police officers and other people with firearms in Stockholm in the area of the Swedish parliament. To this end, the two made concrete preparations in close consultation with ISKP officials. In particular, they researched the local conditions around the possible crime scene on the Internet and tried several times, albeit unsuccessfully, to obtain weapons.

The two suspects were arrested in March this year in Gera, eastern Germany, and have been in custody since.
