A speech by the president of Rome’s Islamic Community urging Muslims to vote against Meloni’s reforms has sparked accusations of Islamist political activism.

Giorgia Meloni’s recent referendum defeat—celebrated by the Left despite failing to inflict the damage many hoped for—may have been aided by a coordinated mobilisation of Muslim voters.

The referendum proposed reforms aimed at curbing the power of Italy’s judiciary, including changes to the role of magistrates and limits on what supporters of Meloni’s government viewed as politically motivated judicial activism.

Footage has emerged of Ahmed Vall, president of the Islamic Community of Rome, urging Muslims to vote against the prime minister’s justice reforms. Vall was filmed telling believers to “go vote for all Muslims and for all free citizens.”

If the judiciary does not remain independent, we Muslims will be one of the first victims. How many times have they tried to close our mosques? How many times have they tried to unjustly repatriate our fellow citizens? How many times have they tried to point the finger at us without concrete evidence?

The footage has reignited debate in Italy over the political role of Islamic organisations and the growing use of religious events as platforms for wider political mobilisation.

One widely shared post reacting to the footage described the speech as being “in defiance of the secular state.”

Il Giornale argued the footage proves “political Islam is among us” and that the efforts of those like Vall are supported by figures on the Italian Left, which “we’ve been denouncing … for years.”

These words are nothing more than confirmation of the Islamist world’s approach. Its goal is none other than the conquest of the West, first by penetrating its institutions and then leading to an ever-increasing number of conversions. They do so during events that are supposed to be purely religious in nature, but which then become the nucleus of actual propaganda.

Lega MEP Silvia Sardone on Wednesday declared that “fighting Islamism [is an] absolute priority to defend Italy from those who want to replace us.” She is working with her colleagues in the European Parliament to affirm “the supremacy of Italian laws over any form of religious parallelism.”
