New research predicts a male fertility crisis, calling out environmental changes as the culprit.

Average male testosterone levels have halved over the past 50 years, according to research.

Scientists say society is facing a male fertility crisis, against a backdrop of rising obesity and diabetes levels. On Tuesday, July 7th, the annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in London heard how total testosterone levels in men declined by 54% between 1972 and 2019.

Environmental factors such as endocrine-disrupting chemicals and global warming were also cited as potential culprits. For Professor Hagai Levine of the Hebrew University-Hadassah Braun School of Public Health and Community Medicine in Israel,

I think that we have a major crisis in male reproductive health and it’s currently not given enough attention.

The changing medical picture also coincides with changes to the social position of men, sometimes—but seldom accurately—discussed as a ‘crisis of masculinity.’
