Swedish media on Friday, July 3rd quoted the Swedish Police Association as saying that the victim of a violent incident in Copenhagen, a policeman in his thirties who was off duty, has died.
On Tuesday evening, a “commotion” arose at the popular Islands Brygge harbourfront area in central Copenhagen, Denmark where people were watching World Cup matches on that night: Norway against Ivory Coast first and then Sweden against France.
In connection with the matches, reports said, a “brawl” started, and when Copenhagen police arrived at the scene, a seriously injured Swedish man was found. Swedish Expressen quotes Smålands-Tidningen as saying the man had intervened to break up a fight, and was then “subjected to serious violence.”
The man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
“I can confirm that a police officer has died in an incident in Copenhagen,” Åsa Bergman, chair of the Police Association in Region East said. Bergman said a memorial ceremony has been held at the police station in the deceased officer’s hometown.
A suspect who is reported to have turned himself in has been apprehended and was remanded in custody for 26 days.
Media earlier reported that three people had fled the scene on Tuesday. On Wednesday, July 1st the Copenhagen Police force published a picture of the suspected perpetrator and urged him to turn himself in, saying on its website

The incident attracted a lot of attention on social media, with some posts claiming the man had died, and also suggesting his attacker(s) had a migrant background.
