Time is running out for a diplomatic breakthrough in the Middle East, as Washington and Tehran struggle to reconcile competing ultimatums over nuclear deterrence, port blockades, and regional proxy conflicts.

Pakistan has delivered a revised Iranian peace proposal to the United States in a bid to rescue a fragile six-week ceasefire following U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

With diplomatic talks stalled and President Donald Trump declaring the truce to be on ‘life support’, a Pakistani mediating source warned on Monday, May 18th that time is rapidly running out to bridge the widening gaps between the two sides.

Washington continues to demand the total dismantling of Tehran’s nuclear program and the lifting of its blockade on the Strait of Hormuz—a critical point for a fifth of the world’s oil supply.

In contrast, Iran is seeking war reparations, the end of the U.S. blockade on its ports, and a comprehensive halt to regional hostilities, including Israel’s battle with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Despite the temporary truce, regional tensions remain highly volatile. Recent drone strikes launched from Iran targeted Gulf nations, hitting a nuclear power plant in the UAE and prompting interceptions by Saudi Arabian defense forces.

The escalating crisis has driven global crude oil prices up by more than 50%, fueling severe inflation concerns. With domestic political pressure mounting ahead of the November midterm elections, President Trump is reportedly consulting national security advisers to weigh the potential resumption of military action.
