A man was seriously injured on Monday night on Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast after suffering a violent knife attack that several witnesses have described as an attempted beheading.

The attack took place shortly after 10:30 p.m. Police were called to the scene, but the victim was saved thanks to brave passers-by who overpowered the attacker, a black man who is heard yelling in a foreign language before he proceeds to apparently try and cut his (apparently white) victim’s head off. UK media report that the police have described the man as “Somali.” According to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), the victim was rushed to hospital with serious injuries, while a suspect was arrested at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing and, for the time being, authorities have not released the identity of the suspect, as part of a tendency to withhold such information when the attacker is non-white.

For now, confirmed information remains limited. The PSNI has only confirmed that the victim survived the initial attack and remains in hospital with serious injuries. PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said “a critical incident” has been declared and police have “commenced an investigation to establish a motive.”

The lack of official information about the attacker has turned the case into a political issue. Several representatives of Reform UK, including its leader, Nigel Farage, have demanded that authorities immediately disclose the suspect’s identity, nationality, and immigration status. They argue that there is a clear public interest and denounce what they see as an institutional tendency to withhold relevant information when certain crimes involve immigrants.

Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident “sickening,” adding that he will have “absolutely no tolerance for abhorrent scenes of violence like this on our streets.” What “having no tolerance” will actually mean remains unclear.

Albeit the identity of the attacker has not yet been revealed, his suspected background makes the horrific knife crime appear to be coming at a particularly sensitive moment for European migration policy. The European Union’s new Pact on Migration and Asylum, which has just entered fully into force, strengthens the redistribution mechanisms for asylum seekers among Member States and expands mandatory solidarity systems within the bloc. Many in member states that have so far not experienced the consequences of mass uncontrolled migration have probably watched the harrowing video from the UK concerned that such scenes may ultimately unfold in their countries, too.

Given recent developments, what many expect is the institutionalisation of the distribution of individuals whose identity, background, or potential risk cannot always be assessed with complete certainty before their arrival on European territory.

For now, the only certainty is that a man is fighting to recover from extremely serious injuries in a Belfast hospital. And once again, the debate over immigration, security, and institutional transparency is back on the table while the lives of innocent Europeans are at stake.
