The King of the United Kingdom has been diagnosed with a form of cancer, Buckingham Palace has announced.
Charles III will postpone public engagements on doctor’s orders but is “wholly positive” about his treatment. The cancer was identified earlier this month while the 75-year-old underwent a separate hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement.
The Palace said in a statement that the monarch chose to share his diagnosis “to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.” It added:
The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.
A “schedule of regular treatments” has begun, during which His Majesty’s non-public facing duties—such as official paperwork—will continue as usual. Leading political figures have been quick to wish the King well.
